As 2022 nears, many of us look forward to what the new year will bring. While it may still not look like the “normal” we are used to, we excitedly await when we can get out and about again, travel, and attend businesses and events without worry.

2020 and 2021 both saw less vehicles on the roads, largely due to stay-at-home orders because of the COVID-19 pandemic. One would think this would also have forced the car thieves to stay at home as well, but that wasn’t the case. As the years go by, car thieves’ tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This is, in part, because electronic vehicles are becoming more and more popular (and sought after for parts) and vehicles with keyless remote fobs are easier to steal through the capturing of fob signals via wireless transmitter devices.

Car theft is a serious issue in Canada and can cost Canadians upwards of $1 billion dollars annually. This loss comes back on your average drivers, especially those driving vehicles that are “more appealing to thieves” – and can spike their insurance premiums.

Want to know which vehicles were most stolen in 2021? Read on for the top stolen vehicles in Canada, Ontario, and Toronto in this blog.

Most Stolen Vehicles in 2021: Canada

It used to be that the most stolen vehicles would be those that lacked typical theft deterrents, or more expensive SUVs that were stolen to strip for parts and be resold. However, as thieves become more sophisticated, the list has been overtaken by newer vehicles stolen by criminals that know how to outsmart keyless ignitions, advanced deterrents, and so on. Here is a list of the most stolen vehicles in Canada in 2021, in no particular order:

  • 2018 Honda Accord Series
  • 2019 Toyota Highlander Series
  • 2017 Toyota Corolla Series
  • 2019 Honda Civic Series
  • 2017 Chrysler/Dodge Town & Country, Caravan, Voyager, and Grand Caravan Series

How do you deter car thieves?

Car theft is a huge issue in Canada. However, just because your vehicle may be “more appealing” to thieves or uses a keyless fob ignition doesn’t mean it’s impossible to make it more difficult for thieves. For one, if you use a key fob you should always be conscious of where this is placed. Never leave it in your vehicle and try to avoid placing it close to the entrance of your home, where the signal could possibly be copied. There are products you can buy to block the signal of your key fob where you can store it.

Consider the following tips for deterring car theft:

  • Never leave the engine running for when you plan to leave your vehicle unattended, even if it’s only a few minutes.
  • Always lock your doors, close your windows, and your sunroof when you leave your car.
  • Consider implementing an ignition immobilizer to prevent hot-wiring.
  • Park your car in public spaces that are well-lit, or garages.
  • Never store valuables in your car or leave them out in plain view.
  • Purchase a brake pedal lock or steering wheel lock.
