St. Thomas is known as “The Railway City”. A total of 26 railways have passed through the city since 1856. Choo-choo! Oscar-nominated actress Rachel McAdams and NHL hockey star Joe Thornton are both St. Thomas natives. Fame! St. Thomas has the sad distinction of being the place where Jumbo the Circus Elephant passed away. Said to be the world’s largest elephant at the time, Jumbo was struck by a locomotive on September 15, 1885. Big loss.

The Horton Farmers Market is one of Ontario’s leading and most historic. Founded in 1878, the market offers the best in local, fresh produce from farms within 60 km of the market site, as well as bringing together local artisans to sell their wares.
Military Memories
The Elgin Military Museum recounts the stories of Elgin County residents from the War of 1812 right up to recent conflicts in Afghanistan. Its collection includes two M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers and a collection of around 600 NATO and UN badges, considered to be one of the finest such collections in the world.

St. Thomas lives up to its title as “The Railway City”, offering two places to learn about its rich rail history. The North American Railway Hall of Fame is located in the CASO train station, which was the centre of travel between New York City and Chicago when it was built in the 1870s. Meanwhile, the Elgin Country Railway Museum is located in central St. Thomas.
