While vehicle theft remains a major concern for Canadian drivers, the latest report from the Équité Association shows that after years of rapidly increasing, vehicle theft may finally be on the decline. Following years of alarming increases in theft, which peaked in 2023 with over $1.6 billion in losses in the province of Ontario alone, the Canadian Government began a large-scale crackdown on this lucrative, but under-persecuted crime. Despite recent reports showing a national decline in thefts compared to peak levels, auto theft still continues to exceed $1 billion in insurance claims annually.
The Équité Association, Canada’s national authority on insurance crime and fraud prevention, recently released their annual Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles list based on theft data.
Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles in Canada
According to Équité Association’s latest release, the Toyota RAV4 has taken the top spot for the most stolen vehicle across Canada by total number of thefts. Last year, the Toyota Highlander ranked number one on the list, but has dropped to number eight.
Here are the most stolen vehicles nationwide, ranked by the number of thefts in 2024:
| No. | Make/Model | Most Stolen Model Year | # of Vehicles Insured | # of Thefts | Theft Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota RAV4 | 2021 | 554,086 | 2,080 | 0.38% |
| 2 | Dodge RAM 1500 Series | 2022 | 521,734 | 2,018 | 0.39% |
| 3 | Honda CR-V | 2020 | 516,262 | 1,911 | 0.37% |
| 4 | Ford F150 Series | 2023 | 598,353 | 1,833 | 0.31% |
| 5 | Honda Civic | 2020 | 683,897 | 1,797 | 0.26% |
| 6 | Jeep Wrangler | 2023 | 144,345 | 1,491 | 1.03% |
| 7 | Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series | 2006 | 599,358 | 1,192 | 0.20% |
| 8 | Toyota Highlander | 2022 | 127,314 | 1,141 | 0.90% |
| 9 | Toyota Tundra | 2024 | 74,298 | 1,129 | 1.52% |
| 10 | Lexus RX Series | 2023 | 98,375 | 1,124 | 1.14% |
While no vehicle is completely safe from auto theft, this list highlights the heavy targeting of SUVs and pickup trucks, vehicle types that are both popular with consumers and have high resale value, making it easier for organized thieves to move these vehicles overseas for resale or parts.
Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles in Ontario
The province of Ontario consistently remains the highest vehicle theft region across Canada. While some of that has to do with Ontario’s overall population size (more people = more drivers = more vehicles to potentially steal), its proximity to major shipping ports, like the Port of Montreal, amplifies the problem. According to IBC, “Major ports, such as the Port of Montreal, serve as critical hubs in the export process. IBC estimates that the majority of stolen vehicles from Ontario and Quebec are funneled through this port, where they are loaded onto ships for international export. The sheer volume of traffic and the complexity of port operations make it difficult to identify and intercept containers carrying stolen vehicles.”
Despite this, Ontario did see a decline in vehicle thefts this past year, supported by more drivers using anti-theft devices and law enforcement officials shifting their focus to a larger crackdown on vehicle theft.
The Honda CR-V snags the top spot with just over 1,300 thefts, a far cry from last year’s number one – the Lexus RX Series with 2,852 thefts.

Insurance Companies Take Action Against Auto Theft
Last year, after a substantial year-over-year increase in theft across Canada, some insurance companies began adding surcharges to vehicles if they have a high risk of being stolen.
In order for policyholders to get the surcharge removed, insurance carriers have been mandating the installation of anti-theft devices (such as steering-wheel locks, boxes for your car keys that block the key FOB signals, and even engine immobilizers) or the installation of a vehicle tracking system (such as Tag Tracking) to help prevent auto theft and increase the chances of vehicle recovery.
These mandates have largely been for policyholders who own vehicles listed on the “Most Stolen” lists, but some companies have expanded beyond this to include other vehicles that they deem appealing to thieves.
Conclusion
Auto insurance theft is not a victimless crime; it impacts our society as a whole, putting a strain on law enforcement and court resources, insurance companies who experience more claims, victims of theft who deal with the mental anguish of being robbed, and communities who are left without a sense of security in their own neighbourhoods. And while auto theft saw a 19% decrease nationwide, there’s still lots of progress to be made to get back to pre-pandemic theft levels.
