Canada Mandating Electric Vehicle SalesCanada Mandating Electric Vehicle Sales

Under new regulations that Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault proposed in December 2022, 20% of all passenger vehicles, trucks, and SUVs that are sold in Canada in the year 2026 must be capable of running on electricity.

As of 2030, that mandate will require 60% of all passenger vehicles sold in Canada to be electric. Manufacturers and importers could even face penalties under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act if they do not meet sales targets.

Read our blog for more information on this mandate, what it means, and what driving an electric vehicle on the roads in the next few decades might mean for the average policyholder.

Cathi Cullen: A Trip to Build Houses in El SalvadorCathi Cullen Builds Houses in El Salvador

Recently, our Commercial Lines Account Manager, Cathi Cullen, travelled with Shelter Canada to El Salvador to build houses. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

“I had the privilege of serving in El Salvador from February 19th to 27th on a team building houses with Shelter Canada.

After a series of earthquakes left hundreds of thousands of people in El Salvador without a safe home in 2001, a small group of friends from Alberta felt compelled to help. They flew down for one week and built 3 houses, and from that small beginning, was formed the vision and mission of Shelter Canada today. Their theme verse from the Bible is Micah 6:8 “Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly.” They employ a staff of over 45 Salvadorans who develop community leadership, select and prepare families for the build, process and make sure everything is organized for teams like ours to come and build. The Shelter team connects with each of the families, sharing the love of God & hope of Jesus through the whole process.

Since 2001, over 4,700 homes have been built. What a thrill it was to have a part in changing the lives of 16 families as we built 16 houses on this recent trip. We stayed in San Vicente and all the houses were about an hour’s drive from there. The houses are simple steel-framed structures with steel siding, roofs and cement floors. The families are so grateful to get a roof that will not leak or blow away in the rainy season, and doors and windows that lock. One of the new homeowners that we built for told us that he is paid $3 dollars per tonne for cutting sugar cane. With wages like that, you can see what a big help it is to get one of these houses.

I am so grateful to have had this opportunity.”
