Breathalyzer Tests Now Mandatory in All GTA Traffic Stops
Impaired driving charges in Ontario have increased almost 30 percent over the last five years, with 11,000 charges in 2023 compared to more than 8,000 in 2019. Collisions have also increased significantly by almost 50 percent.
In May, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began a pilot project in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) that requires drivers to provide a breath sample whenever they are pulled over by the OPP, regardless of whether there is any suspicion of alcohol consumption. This is a new effort to improve road safety and tackle the rise in impaired driving across the GTA.
