Announcing Intact’s New Coverage For Uber Drivers In Ontario

Intact Insurance is introducing an innovative new product called Uber Commercial Insurance, which will allow Uber drivers to be insured automatically.

Intact Insurance’s collaboration with Uber will be the first of its kind in Canada. According to Intact Insurance, policy holder’s can expect “extensive coverage for all drivers and passenger who use Uber ridesharing services in Ontario.”

How Does It Work?

This new policy will cover drivers and their passengers, from when the Uber app is first turned on to when the passenger exits the vehicle. When the app is offline, the vehicle owner’s personal auto insurance will come into effect instead.

As an Uber driver you will only be covered by Intact’s new blanket policy from the time you make yourself available to accept ride requests to when your passenger exit the vehicle. When you are not acting as an Uber driver and instead are using your vehicle for personal trips, such as taking your kids to soccer, getting groceries, or driving to a friend’s house, you will be covered under your personal auto insurance policy. The chart below explains when you will be using the Intact/Uber commercial policy and when you will be using your personal insurance.

4 Phases Of Uber Insurance

Intact Insurance has broken the Uber Insurance process into four phases, to make understanding when you’re covered simpler.

When Am I Covered By My:

Personal Policy

During Phase 0 Intact Insurance policy holders are protected under their personal auto insurance policy at no additional cost.

Commercial Policy

The new Uber commercial insurance policy will provide coverage to all vehicles, drivers (regardless of their personal auto insurance provider) and passengers through Phases, 1, 2, and 3 of the Uber journey.

This commercial policy is issued to the Uber Corporation, who is responsible for paying the premium on this policy. This means the Uber driver is not responsible for paying the “blanket policy” premium, instead their employer, Uber, will be handling these costs. Intact policy holders are only response for paying the premium on their personal auto insurance policy.

What Are You Covered For?

During Phase 0 – A driver has coverage up to the specified limit on their personal auto insurance policy.

During Phase 1 – During the “Pre-Acceptance Period,” when a driver is logged into the Uber app but has not yet accepted a ride request, the Intact policy provides the following,

  • Statutory Accident Benefits
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage
  • Third Party Liability Coverage with limits of $1 million;
  • Family Protection Coverage (OPCF 44R) with a limit of $1 million
  • Collision and Comprehensive Coverages with a $1,000 deductible*

During Phases 2 and 3 – During the “Post-Acceptance Period,” when the driver has accepted a ride request is on their way to pick them up or drop them off, the Intact policy provides the following,

  • Statutory Accident Benefits
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage
  • Third Party Liability Coverage with a limit of $2 million
  • Family Protection Coverage (OPCF 44R) with a limit of $2 million
  • Collision and Comprehensive Coverages with a $1,000 deductible*

*Only drivers who have Collision and Comprehensive Coverage on their personal auto policy will be eligible for this coverage under the Uber commercial policy.
